Communist Party of Swaziland condemns flagrant abuse of public funds by Mswati; calls upon the people of Swaziland to revolt against Mswati’s 50th birthday celebrations
The Communist Party of Swaziland (CPS) condemns the flagrant abuse of people’s funds by the tinkhundla regime ahead of sub-Saharan Africa’s last absolute monarch Mswati III’s lavish birthday party slated for . For Mswati’s extravagant birthday party, the Swaziland taxpayer will part with at least R259.5 million.
The Swaziland government has bought a fleet of luxury BMW cars worth at least R89 million, adding to an initial R20 million budget for the celebrations. Mswati is also expected to receive a second private jet worth more than R150.5 million as a birthday present. This total budget is, however, expected to increase exponentially, if history is anything to go by. All these public funds are for Mswati and his family’s entertainment!
As if the above were not enough, Mswati has been sending his emissaries to communities to demand cattle from the people in order to add to the celebrations’ excessive budget. Families are expected to deliver on this demand or else face victimisation from the regime. This is one of the acts of self-enrichment by Mswati. He will, after collecting these cattle, sell them to the government, as he has done many times before, and expropriate this money for himself! We therefore also condemn this continued enslaving of the people by the monarch!
Such brazen waste of public funds and enslaving of the people occurs despite the fact that about 70% of the people of Swaziland live below the poverty line. As recent as 2017 the regime claimed that it did not have funds to help over 350 000 Swazis who were in desperate need of food aid.
The Communist Party of Swaziland calls upon all progressive forces to unite under the banner of democracy in the fight against the tinkhundla regime. Workers should also be in the forefront in this fight for freedom. The people of Swaziland have been called by history to unite and overthrow the last absolute monarch in sub-Saharan Africa if they are to have a bright future.
The first step towards the overthrow of the Mswati autocracy is the boycott of the 2018 tinkhundla parliamentary elections. Swaziland’s parliament does not have any powers to hold Mswati and his government to account. This is why the 2018 tinkhundla elections are nothing but a sham, conducted simply for Mswati to deepen his power as an absolute monarch.
This is the year to make Swaziland ungovernable by the Mswati autocracy! The Communist Party of Swaziland will continue to mobilise the oppressed people and all necessary material resources in the revolutionary fight against the Mswati autocracy!
